Remote access when your ISP gives you no public IP

Satellite and mobile links often sit behind carrier-grade NAT. Here is how to reach everything anyway.

By TECHNET Engineering · 1 Oct 2026 · Network

Carrier-grade NAT means you share a public address with many other customers. Port-forwarding — the traditional way to reach an office from outside — simply cannot work.

Flip the direction

Instead of letting the world connect in, every device connects out to an encrypted mesh. The mesh introduces authorised devices to one another, so an administrator can reach the office from anywhere without a single open inbound port.

Plan a fallback

  • Run a relay so traffic still flows when a direct path cannot be negotiated.
  • Keep a hardened jump host in the cloud as a last-resort route for your automation.
  • Put management interfaces on the mesh only — never on the public internet.

The side benefit: with nothing listening on the public side, there is nothing for internet scanners to find.
